First Laser Refractive Surgery Assessment
6th August 2007
First Laser Refractive Surgery Assessment by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists
The Royal College of Ophthalmologists held the first assessment module for Laser Refractive Surgery Assessment in May this year. Scrutiny of the level of skill and ability of surgeons to deliver quality surgery to prospective clients is a high priority to the RCO. A selected group of surgeons sat the assessment including Mr Srinivasan Subramaniam one of our consultants.
Prior to the examination each candidate was required to submit an audit of at least 50 consecutive refractive procedures they had carried out over the last 2 years. Two case reports of 750 to 1,500 words (plus pictures) which illustrate a complication, issue of consent or interesting problem. Each candidate also was required to produce documentary evidence of CME over the past year, including appraisal documents.
The assessment day focussed on four areas relating to refractive surgery:
1. Basic science and pre-operative assessment
a. Anatomy, physiology, pathology and optics of the cornea and lens
b. Principles, physics and bio-interactions of excimer lasers
c. Interpretation of refraction, topography, Pachymetry, pupillometry and
Wavefront scanning techniques
2. Equipment:
a. Micro-keratome (used in making the flap)
b. Excimer laser. Assessment, familiarisation, maintenance, diagnostics and
Troubleshooting
3. Complication
Anticipation, prevention and management of intra operative and post operative complications
4. Good Medical Practice
a. Consent process/information to patients
b. Knowledge of relevant standards
c. Clinical governance
d. Facilities
e. Advertising and marketing
Subsequent to the course Mr Subramaniam has been informed by the Deputy Head of Examinations, that he has successfully passed the assessment. This is the first such course of its’ kind and is an important benchmark for all discerning prospective patients should seek. Who is performing surgery? What are their credentials? Am I safe in their hands?
