The accuracy and precision of the Excimer laser
The unparalleled precision of the Excimer laser makes it uniquely suited to the task of refractive laser eye surgery. Each pulse of the laser removes 0.25 microns of corneal tissue. The equivalent of slicing 1/200 off a human hair, 1/28 of a red blood cell – and in 4 billionths of a second. This allows the Lasik surgeon to literally sculpt the cornea into a more desirable shape, gently and precisely, and allows rays of light to focus properly on the retina.
With wavefront aberrometry and computer control, the precision now available in laser eye surgery gives excellent post-operative vision quality. Most patients report seeing better after Lasik eye surgery than they have ever seen with glasses or contact lenses.
